Get Healthy Kentucky

launches 2008 “No Spit” All-Star campaign

Campaign will honor baseball players who pledge not to use tobacco products

FRANKFORT , KY For the second consecutive year, “The Sports Flash” (TSF) Radio Network and Get Healthy Kentucky (GHK) are collaborating to reduce tobacco use in the Commonwealth with the 2008 Kentucky “No Spit” All-Star campaign.  The campaign will honor the best high school baseball players in Kentucky who have pledged not to use spit tobacco or any tobacco products – on or off the field!  The campaign kicks off on March 24 and coincides with the beginning of the high school baseball season.

According to the Kentucky Youth Survey 2006, 23-percent of high school males have used some form of smokeless tobacco in the past 30 days.  The goal of No Spit All-Stars is to increase awareness of the dangers of using smokeless tobacco among high school baseball players!  It is important that young people throughout the state understand that smokeless or spit tobacco products are not a safe and have no place in youth sports.

St. Xavier’s Damon McCormick won the inaugural Get Healthy Kentucky “No Spit” All-Star of the Year.  McCormick pitched four shutouts and three one-hitters for St. X, finishing his senior season with a 6-2 record and a 1.91 earned run average.  At the plate, McCormick hit .300 with 19 stolen bases for head coach John Jefferson. McCormick is currently the starting shortstop for Valparaiso University .

Each week during the high school baseball season, TSF Radio Network will accept nominations from fans, coaches, parents, and the media for the weekly honor.  The nominees must sign the GHK “No Spit” All-Star pledge not to use spit tobacco or any tobacco products – on or off the field!  Pledges are available for download at www.TheSportsFlash.com.  Fans from across Kentucky will have the opportunity each week to vote for the weekly winner online at www.TheSportsFlash.com.
